Title Sequence final

Doll Grudger Title Sequence from Oliver Hupfau on Vimeo.

So here is my final title sequence, The sound is played on an AKAI MPK49 keyboard and then altered in logic pro 8. Overall Im satisfied with my title sequence and thinks it works well with my movie. Ive worked very hard on it and had fun at the same time, taking film and editing into something I will do in my spare time. enjoy :)

Poster final

I am happy with the structure of the poster and believe it stands tall next to my packaging and movie.
Here is my final poster I am hap

+ & - week 13

Positive
I finished my Packaging design in class today and am pleased with the result, its amazing how much you get done when your focussed. I also finished my poster and Dvd Label

Negative
I still havent finallised sound for my title sequence credits

Interesting
This is due next week

+ & - week 12

Positive
I have made a start on my packaging design and its coming together well, i have chosen to keep it simple as I believe its the safe option for a horror film , creating a sense of wonder about it.

Negative
I still havent completed my sound yet started for that matter, it was risky working before creating sound but im confident i can pull it off

Interesting
Jodie had good feedback when it came to stacking type within the title sequence

Title Sequence Inspiration

I was strolling youtube and found this , its the sort of feel in terms of sound i was aiming for

+ & - week 11

Positive
This week in class i showed Ollie what i had done in After effects, all i needed to fix up was a few sudden camera movements and add sound. i also showed him the poster ideas i have come up with, I needed to slow down step back and just take it back to the drawing board, i knew i wanted the triangular form i had been going with but something was just not sitting right.

Negative
I had a massive weeked FML right now

Interesting
This is due in 3 weeks

+ & - week 10

This week we didnt have class however i have progressed on my title sequence to the point where i cant go any further without feedback, I have continued working on my poster and have rough ideas down and still not to sure which one to go for.

Poster drafts

Here are some rough ideas i was throwing around for the poster, Im still not sure on which one but i feel as though the triangle gives it more structure.

Title sequence inspiration

The first 30 second of this film clip has been a big influence on my title design both in visuals aswell as sound.

+ & - week 9

Positive
This week i had made considerable progress in the foundations of my title sequence, I expanded on my storyboard idea after talking to Ollie and deciding to use Node cameras within after effects to give the piece more movement. I started on my poster idea figuring out the general look i was going for.

Negative
I had tried doing some complex folds in class but got confused with the template, i decided to revoke on my original idea of something complex and rather take it a step back im not sure if this is even a negative thing.

Interesting
My Title Sequence is coming along nicely

+ & - wk 8

Positive

Today i showed Jodie and Ollie my storyboard for the title sequence i intend on doing. I got good feedback from Ollie in terms of how to approach it in after effects and Jodie told me to think about the type i was using as well as positioning.

Negative
Im still struggling with packaging and focussing on the title sequence right now.

Interesting
Ollie told me to take a photo of texture and edit it in photo shop, it opened my eyes to the possibilities you can create with such small detail

+ & - wk 7

Positive

This week i started story boarding my title and credit sequence for the movie we are creating i am happy with my idea but it might need to be expanded in order to suffice.

Negative

The only negative aspect i have to share about this week is the fact that Im still not sure about which type of DVD cover to embark on creating. I think wallet but i also wouldn't mind testing my skills, as that seems the easy way out.

Interesting

I found the tutorial Ollie gave us to be of most interest this week as it helps dodgy footage become steady which is a great tool to know for some one with shaky nicotine fingers like my own.

Title sequence story board

This is the story board for my title sequence so far, i have decided to play on the idea of drawing the doll out of number of lines over a series of time with the actual credits flickering in different places of the screen as the doll grows. It will eventually shrink down in size and the dolls head will be replaced with the head within the logo, Leaving the logo as its last frame. Sound to accompany this will be eerie and minimal yet build to a climax as the last frame appears. The logo will then fade in opacity leaving the first frame of the movie.

+ & - wk 6

Positive

I finished my movie style guide! i am most happy with the sound treatment as i believe it works well with the visuals. It is quite simple but I'm a strong believer in less is more.

Negative

I am not sure about my color palette created for the movie style guide, how many colours do i need? how do you have a colour palette for a movie? or is it just the supporting material for the movie?

Interesting

I found the introduction to DVD packaging to be very interesting as there are so many choices available even though we are held to the limitations of no glue, tape bluetac or even chewing gum. I am still not sure which idea i want to take on board.

Packaging Inspiration

The pictured DVD packages are all influential to me as they are highly creative and appeal to the eye. When creating my own DVD packaging I would like to use a wallet style case, as well as incorporating my story into the design of the packaging. Ideally I would also like my DVD cover to have a second use whether it be of actual purpose or just decorative. I will next start to brainstorm and sketch how this can be achieved!

This is the style guide to my movie branding so far. The logo includes both illustration and type being "Letter Gothic Std". I believe the illustration works well as it pays homage to the story line of the movie. For fonts used within the movie I have chosen to use Face Your Fears as an example but would prefer it to be hand drawn to create an authentic feel. The secondary type face used is "Teardrop by Blastto". The Mood board incorporates a general feeling of anxiety and depression throughout the characters as well as describes the setting and textures within our movie.

+ & - wk 5

Positive

Throughout the production week i am glad to say i finished the get up and go exercise, both mono and full color production company logos and started working on my movie style guide. This is definitely the biggest positive i have!

Negative

I would have liked to get further within my style guide, but am still happy with the progress Ive made.

Interesting

I found playing within After Effects to be the most interesting aspect of my production week, as there was much more possible than i originally thought. In saying that there is more than just a single way to do something, which i find cool and practical.

Get Up n' Go

For my Get Up and go video I decided to take a different approach to the brief than the obvious suggested. I used my Girl friend as the subject matter and took a quote from lecturer Keith Davis "Wanna get somewhere in life, Make Some NOISE!" I chose this as I believe that this quote is deffinately something that takes place in my daily routine. I chose to portray it in Black and white as when the scream takes place in red it stand out more to the viewer. The scream represents the everyday anxiety and overall worry of what will happen in the future, will we be rich or poor, healthy or sick etc. etc. I used sound such as a heartbeat, scream and pen to paper. I tried recording the scream myself but due to a non sound proof room there was far to much re-verb and hence the sound began clipping at higher pitches. I also added a ripple effect into the last scene referencing the text one last time. Hope ya dig it, ya dig!

Here is my two final versions of my Production Company Logo. I have incorporated both Sound and animation and they run no longer than 5 seconds each. Through after effects I key framed each step within opacity and scale to create the pulse of the logo, and added a noise effect in to create the noise. I believe my sound compliments the Logo well, and strenghtens the overall presence it has on the screen.

+ & - wk 4

Positive

This week i finally figured out how my production company logo was going to look and can say i am happy with it. I think my problems with type and kerning in the previous attempt has finally been worked out.

Negative

I had not yet story boarded my animation for the logo which means i have not yet received feedback on it, but this is only my fault so im to blame!

Interesting

The title sequences created by Saul Bass really stuck in mind, so simple yet so moving and captivating. The fact that he had it all right so many years ago and it was put down leading t worse design, before people realised the man was a genious!

Pictured here is both my final logo in full colour and monotone. The main changes I have made since my last post include the font being changed as well as the word "productions" being added. The logo also has more space within the type creating more air throughout the design. My next step from here is to step on into animating these two logos.

+ & - wk 3

Positive

This week i began filming my Get Up and Go exercise and was extremly excited about working with film, it has always been a secret passion of mine but never really took it further than filming me and my friends doing stupid stunts as pre teens. I used my Girlfirend as the subject matter, and also began playing with sound which is a hobby of mine.

Negative

I still dont quite get type, kernign leading and tracking just doesnt make sense to me, although I am trying to become better at these little things. Within my logo I am not sure about the type choice used.

Interesting

I enjoyed the tutorial on colour correction as i have a bunch of other things outside of uni i would like to apply this tutorial to, hopefully it looks as good as it did in class!

Here is a bunch of Film company Logos, Unfortunately i cant find any that aren't in a cheesy montage. If i had to choose a single company which I am extremely fond of i would have to say it would be Hopscotch Films as they take an Idea so simple and portray it in a way which really captivates there audience.

This is the final logo which i have chosen to animate for our film company. I chose this one as I like the simplicity it holds. The hybrid type created within the letter mark is a combination between Reklame script and Bottle Depot as i found it to be my favorite combination of letters to create both T and F.

The pictured logos are again a draft of our new production name "Time flicker". Personally i like the far bottom Left and the middle letter mark. I will continue to play with these ideas and hopefully have a finished product which I'm happy with over the next few days. I think my biggest problem is typography but i have found it both interesting and inspirational cutting up different type faces to create the one.
This is an example of two types Bottle Depot and Reklame script formed together to create the one hybrid font. I enjoy doing these type of exercises and will continue to develop my skills in creating hybrid types.

pro co logo draft

Here are the first draft of logos produced for my production company, to be completely honest i hate them all and we decided to change our name. If i was to focus on any of the pictured logos it would have to be the MAO made up of triangles.

+ & - wk 2

Positive

My story board idea for Up and go was liked by Both Ollie and Jodie. Although it was a unique take on the brief, they had no reason to put me down for doing it. My knowledge is ever expanding when it comes to movie and title sequences, which is always a good thing!

Negative

My production company logos are shocking, I hate the name. I believe we are changing it but the name has not become apparent yet.

Interesting

I enjoyed watching the different logos of production companies, and found it interesting in the sense of the various types of logos there are and how they are animated. Before todays class i didnt even notice the amount of varying production company logo's there are.

+ & - wk 1

Positive

This week We were introduced to title credits and how they work. Prior to this subject the only thing involving moving graphics I had done was all flash based. I believe my interest in film will finally become a physical interest, and hopefully i will have some creative outcome to show for this.

Negative

To be completely honest I believe it is to early within the subject to distinguish any negatives. if i had any i guess it would be being a bit overwhelmed with the use of After Effects.

Interesting

I found the variety of outcomes through after effects that can be achieved to be the most interesting to me. It seems that After Effects is the most powerful tool i have come across from Adobe in terms of film treatment. I also found it quite interesting that what we can do now on our computers would have cost millions of dollars to do 15 years ago.

Week 1: An Introduction

Within our first class we were introduced to the subject and what would be covered throughout the semester. We are to create a Title Sequence to compliment the short video we will be creating in Advanced Design Research, We were shown a number of examples from the industry and previous students. I have to say I am quite excited to learn After effects and if it wasn't for this class I don't think I would have ever given film a go. An example of a title sequence that I find completely captivating is the opening credits to " Enter the void" by "Gaspar NoƩ "

I believe this title sequence works as it captivates the viewer through the almost seizure like characteristics.

As an exercise in Jodie's half of the class we were asked to create a storyboard in which 8 words appear and a short story is told. I chose to take a sinister approach using a quote from one of my other Lecturers " Keith Davis" being 'Wanna get somewhere in life make some noise'. Using my Girl friend as the subject matter.
We were then asked to film or shoot photos to create this storyboard within after effects. The more I learn about this program the more interested I become.
